Rough-hewn rubble stone

Coastal is the most textured profile we make: deeply cut rubble pieces of mixed size with a rough-hewn face, laid with a full mortar joint like a New England or Ozark stone wall. It suits cottages, lake houses, garden walls, and fireplaces where the stone should look gathered rather than cut.

One color, Rubble, a mid-gray blend that takes a gray or buff mortar equally well.

Piece sizes and weight

Pieces run 5.5 to 12.5 inches long and 2.75 to 7.25 inches high. Weight is 5 to 8 pounds per square foot.

Installing Coastal

Coastal is an adhered manufactured stone veneer and goes on like any other: a weather-resistive barrier and metal lath over framed walls, a scratch coat, then each piece is buttered with mortar and pressed to the wall. Over concrete or block, the scratch coat goes straight onto the masonry. Keep the stone at least 4 inches above grade and 2 inches above paving, use corners at every outside corner, and follow the manufactured stone veneer installation guide and your local code. Coastal is laid with a full mortar joint, the way a rubble wall is built.

How to order Coastal

Every color is its own product. Open the color, enter the wall area in square feet, and add corners in linear feet if the wall turns a corner. The order minimum is 100 square feet of flats per color; corners have no minimum and can be ordered alone. Prices are on every product page, factory-direct, with no dealer in between.

Stone is made to order in Lenexa, Kansas, and is usually ready in 2 to 4 weeks. Most customers pick up at the plant; if you cannot, we arrange freight to your address and you pay the carrier. Because every run is made for one job, orders are final sale. Order the whole wall from one run so the color stays consistent, and add 10 percent for cuts and waste.

Questions about Coastal

Is Coastal a fieldstone look?

Close to it. Fieldstone is rounder and more irregular; Coastal is rubble, rough-faced but roughly squared, so it lays faster and the courses stay more level.

What mortar joint suits Coastal?

A full joint, half to three-quarter inch, raked or tooled. The joint is part of the look; do not drystack it.

Do you have Coastal in other colors?

Only Rubble is in the catalog today. For a project above our custom minimum we can match a color; ask for a project quote.
