The all-purpose ashlar

Classic is squared and rectangular stone in mixed sizes with a rough face, laid in a coursed ashlar pattern. It is the look of a traditional stone house: neither as rustic as fieldstone nor as formal as Dimensional. Because it sits in the middle, it goes with brick, siding, stucco and timber alike, which is why it goes on so many different houses.

Five colors: Snow in white, Mist in gray, Charcoal in dark gray, Charcoal Peach in gray with warm undertones, and Fargo Brown in browns. The Classic fireplace in Natural with Charcoal and the Mist and Texas Blend walls on the projects page show the range.

Piece sizes and weight

Pieces run 6.5 to 11 inches long and 3.5 to 7 inches high. Weight is 5 to 8 pounds per square foot.

Installing Classic

Classic is an adhered manufactured stone veneer and goes on like any other: a weather-resistive barrier and metal lath over framed walls, a scratch coat, then each piece is buttered with mortar and pressed to the wall. Over concrete or block, the scratch coat goes straight onto the masonry. Keep the stone at least 4 inches above grade and 2 inches above paving, use corners at every outside corner, and follow the manufactured stone veneer installation guide and your local code. Classic is laid in coursed ashlar with a half-inch joint or tight, either way looks right.

How to order Classic

Every color is its own product. Open the color, enter the wall area in square feet, and add corners in linear feet if the wall turns a corner. The order minimum is 100 square feet of flats per color; corners have no minimum and can be ordered alone. Prices are on every product page, factory-direct, with no dealer in between.

Stone is made to order in Lenexa, Kansas, and is usually ready in 2 to 4 weeks. Most customers pick up at the plant; if you cannot, we arrange freight to your address and you pay the carrier. Because every run is made for one job, orders are final sale. Order the whole wall from one run so the color stays consistent, and add 10 percent for cuts and waste.

For larger projects, ask for a sample board and a project quote. Get a quote or call 913-345-8888, Monday through Friday.

Questions about Classic

What is coursed ashlar?

Stone laid in horizontal courses where each course can be a different height and the pieces within a course vary in length. It looks ordered without looking mechanical. Classic and Ashlar both use it; Classic has the rougher face.

Which Classic color goes with red brick?

Snow and Mist contrast cleanly; Fargo Brown blends. Bring a brick to the plant and hold it against the boards, that settles it in a minute.

How much Classic do I need for a chimney?

Measure each face, add them up, subtract nothing for the flue, and add 10 percent. Count every outside corner top to bottom for corners. A typical exterior chimney runs 150 to 300 square feet.
